The Chocolate Kiss of My Business Cookie: A Photographer’s Planner

Every cookie has that one ingredient that makes it into something amazing. My favorite cookies are the peanut butter with chocolate kiss (what’s the name for those?). Plain peanut butter just isn’t the same without that chocolate kiss. For my photography business, the one ingredient that keeps me going is my Photographer’s Planner from Colorvale®. Before you click away thinking you already have a calendar or maybe you love your life in your own organized chaos, listen to how this planner can change the fate of your business.

photographer's planner

When you become a full time photographer, you become…

  • a marketing machine in a social media frenzy
  • a wonder woman (or man) of time management
  • the circus show’s own personal balancing act (between work and family life)
  • a blogger (SEO, your portfolio, duh!)
  • customer service for all of your inquiries and customer contact + sales closer
  • the project management team of new sessions
  • the photographer
  • the editing and final product designer (though Colorvale’s editing tools will simplify this process too)
  • the product order-taker, order placer, and do quality control for all of your prints, canvases, etc.
  • the book-keeper and accountant

Ok, so that’s just a few of the other ingredients that make up your photography business – you know this already – nothing new there. It’s hard to keep it all straight and not let something slip to the wayside. It’s easy to try to check off the easy tasks and feel accomplished, but isn’t always the smartest move when you have other tasks that can grow your business.

Imagine having one place to keep all of the business AND personal to-dos, did-dos, and wanna-dos together and that you can also take on the go with you like a mobile office? No more lists all over the place. No more post-its stuck to your computer. An entire view of your world can be in this one planner strategically designed for photography business owners. The reason you need to see your business view in this whole-picture sort of way is so that you can use the past to analyze your efforts. Then, use that knowledge to plan smart for your future – or as Colorvale’s® tagline goes: Plan to Succeed.

Head on over to their product page to see all of the goodies inside of this book. I am not being paid to make this post – it truly is a product I LOVE and use regularly. My favorite pages are the blog idea pages (it’s the best way to keep client photo blog posts organized and hold you accountable), the weekly pages so I can see my week as a whole + track business growth, also the little nooks and crannies found throughout to customize is exactly what I needed (like the meal idea section, for example, since I meal plan like a boss). On top of it all, it’s durable, yet soft, and every cover choice is super pretty!

I cross my heart when I tell you this, my business would crumble without my planner. I’d have no direction. I would end up shooting for days and get lost in editing (the fun parts of business!) and have no clients, because I’d forget to do all of the other tasks. It would be like floating through the days and hoping for the best – instead, I’m in control. You can be too.

How Planning is Your Business Fate

You get home from your day job and the last thing you want to do is work more on another business (your photography business). So you make a few calls, put a Facebook post out, edit a little, call it a day, and watch tv. Maybe this isn’t exactly you, but think of your life in this moment. What does it look like?

For me, I am a work-from-home-mom. My kids are in “school” 3 days a week. The emails and business tasks don’t stop on the days I have them home. On those days, I have to fit in work in random bits of time  (nap time and bed time). When I put the kids down for a nap or bed for the night, most days, I am done. D-O-N-E. A 3 year old and 15 month old keep you busy…. especially when life happens and they get sick, refuse to nap, or even on the great days when I use up all of my energy simply playing. No matter your story, it is incredibly easy to get off track in your business. There is never enough time in the day.

The next sentence I’m about to say to you will change your perspective:

What you do now (today) for your business will affect the results you see in 90 days.

An old business coach taught me this years ago. Time and time again, it’s been proven to be true. If a photographer decides to quit their photography business, because they “don’t get enough bookings or business is slow” – this is usually a mask for the real reason. Perhaps the photographer was spending too much time on the things that aren’t going to drive new clients (or repeat business). Perhaps the photographer simply wasn’t taking the steps to connect with a more people (it is a numbers game and a Facebook post here and there just isn’t gonna cut it). But how would you know your mistakes or even your strong points, if you aren’t planning and tracking?

By seeing all of your tasks in one place, you will begin to understand the tasks that actually grow your business. This understanding is your business fate, because it gives you direction. You will be able to see where you need to spend your time. You will know when you are slacking in one area – like not making enough phone calls to say, “Hey, you are having a baby. Congratulations! Let’s book a session…”

Take it from me – I’ve been working from home and self-employed for 6 years now and still going strong. You must plan and analyze your efforts in order to reach your dreams. The Photographer’s Planner from Colorvale® is just that: for photographers like you. Let this business tool be the dynamic force that drives your photography business to success. It seriously is like chocolate – it’s that amazing!

I help client documentary photographers fine-tune their workflow + marketing game, so their work is filled with sessions that represent their voice + client values while earning a living. I shoot undirected, off-beat stories that aren’t preserved often enough (like the story of couples before starting a fam or becoming empty-nesters – a dream project of mine), so my clients’ old box of photos is a meaningful, visual diary of their life + legacy to leave behind.
